This Symposium has been designed to do two things:

1. provide a forum for ACT MS users to meet each other and in learning about each others work, promote the possibilities of local interaction and co-operation

2. provide a platform for MS vendors to inform participants about current developments in MS and chromatographic technologies.

The Symposium is free. However, as the number of places is limited and for catering purposes, we ask that you register, as above, and inform us, if you are later, unable to attend.

The Mass Spectrometry Facility is an important element of research infrastructure for the biological and biomedical sciences. Established and maintained by RSBS, it will provide long-term support for researchers at the ANU and in the wider research community of the ACT region.

Equipment available:

The Facility is equipped with four different types of mass spectrometers and three HPLCs for biological research.

		- Electron Ionisation - Chemical Ionisation (Positive and Negative) - Electron-Capture Ionisation

		Thermo Finnigan LCQ Deca Plus ProteomeX Work station Micromass QTof 2
		- Electrospray Ionisation (available on both LCQ and QTof2) - Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation/ Atmospheric Pressure - - Photo Ionisation (APPI/APCI) - Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS)

Operational Philosophy:

• One time sample set: This is for you if you need help with an experimental design or if you want to analyse your own data but would like us to do ONE sample analysis first (max 1 hours acquisition time, e.g. one time GC-MS run or direct infusion into LC-MS). Sample prepared by client, run by Unit staff and simple interpretation supplied as required.

• Training: After appropriate training, people may operate instruments to acquire data from their own samples.

• Collaboration: This is for you if you want the Unit to be actively involved in the development of methodology, preparation of samples, and interpretation of results, leading up to a joint publication with the Unit staff member as an author.

• Supervision: You can invite a Unit staff member to join your supervisory panel. You will then work with this person for the duration of your research programme. There is an expectation that the supervisor will be an author on relevant publications.

• Acknowledgments: Whenever data derived from the use of the instruments in the RSBS Mass Spectrometry Facility is published, it should be formally acknowledged, unless there is co-authorship. We also ask that a copy of all such published work be provided to the Unit for incorporation into the Annual Report.
