The Brain of the Tammar Wallaby (Macropus eugenii) in Stereotaxic Coordinates

Nomenclature

Despite the widespread use of English in all areas of science, Latin nomenclature for brain structures has been retained in the present atlas because of its universal applicability and its familiarity to anatomists of most countries of the world. Although abbreviations frequently reflect the structures Latin name, in some instances we have made use of abbreviations contained in the atlas of the rat brain (Paxinos and Watson, 1986) where retention of Latin terms is exceptional. However, in view of the similarity between many English and Latin terms, this should present no problem. For example the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus is designated LGNd which is equally reflective of its Latin translation, n. corporis geniculati lateralis, dorsalis. For ease of usage, an index of structures comprising the common English equivalent has been included.
