Vision in health and disease

Presented by Dr Ted Maddess, Dr Michael Ibbotson, Dr Ian Morgan
Visual Sciences Group

The Visual Science group examines all kinds of visual systems from invertebrates to vertebrates. These systems are studied using behavioural, pharmacological, electrophysiological, genetic, and fMRI methods. Questions include limits on visual function, what tools are exploited to garner information from natural images, interactions between visual processing and head and eye movements, epigenetic factors in development of the visual system, and measuring dysfunction of the visual system and the brain.

In this session students will experience aspects of three sub-programs of the group. These include new diagnostic devices for eye diseases, research on juvenile onset myopia and the function of the visual cortex. Some session components will include hands on experiments and others short lectures and demonstrations. In some experimental sessions students can participate as experimental subjects, but these students would have to read and sign consent forms.
