Don't
lose sight! Photoreceptor damage, recovery and retinal
degenerations. Can we help?
Presented by Dr
Krisztina Valter and students
Cell Biology of Retinal Damage & Protection Laboratory,
Visual
Sciences Group
The
activities of this laboratory are aimed at gaining
a better understanding of the characteristics of the
central nervous system, specifically the retina and
its ulnerabilities. The group is studying the effects
of environmental changes on retinal photoreceptor
cells, establishing their damaging or protective effects
on the system. Members of this laboratory investigate
degenerative diseases of the CNS in the retina (e.g.
age-related macular degeneration and retinitis
pigmentosa ) and the brain (Alzheimer's disease).
In
this session, Dr Valter will present an introductory
talk about the visual system - specifically the retina,
as well as an overview of the activities of the laboratory.
Following the presentation, students will have the
opportunity to engage in laboratory activities. These
will involve
the preparation of histological staining of retinal
sections, and
undertake microscopic analysis of the provided tissue
samples to observe the effects of retinal degeneration
and ageing.
