Summer Research Scholarships in RSBS

RSBS enthusiastically participates in the Summer Research Scholarship program.

Summer Research Scholarships are designed for talented students considering undertaking postgraduate research in the future. They are an excellent opportunity to work with distinguished researchers, utilising facilities and materials not readily available elsewhere.

Who can apply?
The scholarships are intended for students currently enrolled in Australian and New Zealand universities completing the third or fourth year of a full-time course leading to an honours degree. The duration of the scholarship is normally between eight and eleven weeks, commencing between late-November and early December and concluding in early February.

What do Summer Research Scholars do?
In RSBS Summer scholars work closely with an academic supervisor in the laboratory on a research topic of their choice. At the conclusion of the research project summer scholars submit a brief report on their findings. Students have a unique opportunity to work with researchers in RSBS who are international leaders in their fields. The summer research scholarship also allows students to experience a specialist research environment first-hand.

What does the scholarship entail?
A scholarship provides a contribution towards travel expenses to and from Canberra based on economy rail fares at student concession rates (or, for people from more distant parts of Australia, and New Zealand, economy-class airfares), accommodation and all meals at a residential college on campus and a weekly allowance of $135 (tax exempt – 2008/9 rate). Summer Scholars are generally all accomodated at Burgmann College, where a program of social activities is conducted for summer students.

Research Projects for Summer Scholars

Ben states that a highlight of his experience at RSBS is the “well chosen and thought out project” which his supervisor had set out for him. Throughout the process he had the ability to learn and try various techniques such as gene expression, plant physiology and CO2 gas exchange.
