Therese Jo RSBS Summer Scholar

Therese has just finished the first year of a 7-year combined Advanced Science and Medicine degree - BSc (Adv) + MBBS at Sydney University. Therese leapt at the Summer Scholarship opportunity for the experience and the chance to explore research in a field that she is interested in, but is not an aspect of her course at Uni.

Therese worked on a project in the Visual Sciences Group with a patented Medical Diagnostic devise developed by Prof Ted Maddess and Dr Andrew James, used primarily for the diagnosis of Glaucoma. Glaucoma is the second commonest cause of blindness world wide affecting about 2% of the population over 50 years. The new test is quick, easy to use and highly accurate, having very low test retest variability in comparison with other perimeters. The test has also proven to be useful in the diagnosis of other eye diseases. Therese is conducting research on a new generation of the device which could hopefully lead to a better, more accurate system of detecting glaucoma in its early stages.

”Although the summer holiday may seem a big sacrifice it isn't really when you think about all the great new friends you will make and the invaluable experiences and memories that you will come away with when it's over. An opportunity like this doesn't come often enough, so if you happen to be fortunate enough to get the chance to come here, go for it and make the most of it”, Therese says.
