Rose Manhire-Heath RSBS Summer Scholar

Investigating cell migration in Drosophila melanogaster

Rose worked on a summer research project in the MGE group and is in the fortunate position of being able to continue the line of research when she returns to RSBS to undertake a PhD in 2008. Before coming to Canberra, Rose completed her Biochemistry and Honours degrees at Otago University in New Zealand. Rose says that she “wouldn’t have made the decision to move to Australia without coming here first”.

The summer project undertaken by Rose looked into new ways of ‘knocking out’ particular genes to help understand how the cells behave using molecular genetics. The results of this project will ultimately define the path that Rose follows to complete her PhD.

“The summer research scholarship has been socially amazing as you get to meet so many people”, says Rose who has really enjoyed her 8 week residency. “I would definitely recommend the program to other people as the new experiences have been great”.
