Lisa
Vlahos RSBS Summer Scholar
Lisa’s summer research topic is on the visual
control of eye growth. Her main study explores the environmental
influences of different light intensities that may affect
the rate of eye growth. Lisa’s experiment investigates
whether chickens under normal environmental exposures
and light intensities are less vulnerable to excessive
eye growth than chickens that are exposed to diurnal
ambient indoor lighting conditions. In addition to her
lab work, Lisa has also had the opportunity to attend
a number of conferences and lectures on this subject
throughout her summer scholarship.
Lisa has just completed a combined Bachelor of Science
and Arts majoring in Zoology and Biological Anthropology,
at ANU, and will be studying honours in Biological
Anthropology this year.
Lisa has found her summer scholarship at RSBS to
be a highly beneficial experience. She says, “You
get to meet lots of other summer and research students
during your time at the RSBS. You also get to see
a different side to the ANU that you do not get to
see as an undergraduate. Doing this summer scholarship
has also helped me decide that I do want to have some
sort of research career, rather than the usual Canberra
choice of working in the public service”.
To that end Lisa’s career aspirations now centre
on academic research particularly within Visual Science
and Primatology.
