Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA)

The Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) makes available each year a number of awards for study by research leading to a higher degree. It is normal for recipients to undertake study on a full-time basis, although, subject to strict criteria laid down by DEST, the award may be offered for part-time study.

Stipend: A$20,007 (2008 rate) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments

Other Benefits: Travel to Canberra from within Australia; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance

Maximum Duration: Three years full-time, with a possible six month extension. The award may be offered for part-time study in very special circumstances prescribed by DEST

Take Up Between: 2 January and 31 March

Eligible Program(s): PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research

Eligibility Criteria: Bachelors degree with first-class honours, or a research Masters degree from a recognised university; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia
