ENDEAVOUR INTERNATIONAL POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS (EIPRS)

The Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (EIPRS) are available for study leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy or to a Master of Philosophy and are funded by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). Because competition for the scholarships is intense, at the ANU they are not awarded for study at the Master degree level. Successful applicants will study in areas in which the University has shown a particular research concentration.
Stipend: N/A. Tuition scholarship

Maximum Duration: Three years full-time, with two possible six month extensions (subject to change by DEST).
Take Up By: 31 March Eligible Program(s): PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research.
Eligibility Criteria: Bachelors degree with first class honours, or a research Masters degree from a recognised university; International students; Applicants cannot be considered for an EIPRS if they have already commenced a program of study in Australia at the same level for which the scholarship is sought.
Applications Close: 31 August.

Applicants are also strongly encouraged to make contact with the relevant Graduate Studies Convener or a prospective supervisor, prior to lodging an application, to discuss the proposed research topic and related matters. Hints to assist you with your application are outlined above.

Students who are awarded an EIPRS are typically awarded an ANU PhD Scholarship which pays a living stipend.


ANU PHD SCHOLARSHIPS

Students who apply for the ANU PhD scholarship should also apply for the EIPRS, as typically the ANU PhD scholarship is only awarded to EIPRS recipients.

A number of ANU PhD Scholarships which provide a stipend are funded by Colleges. International scholars must undertake study on a full-time basis.

Stipend: A$19,616 (2007 rate) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments.
Maximum Duration: Three years full-time, with a possible six month extension
Take Up By: 31 March. It is expected that the scholarship normally will be taken up by 31 March in the year for which it is awarded, although, subject to the approval of the prospective supervisor, Head of Department and Dean/Director, a later start date may be possible. The date by which a scholarship must be taken up in a particular instance will be made clear in the formal letter of offer for the scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria: Bachelors degree with at least upper second-class honours, or a Masters degree with a research component or equivalent; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia; International Students
Applications Close: Applications for international students are normally due by 31 August. However, Colleges may consider applications at any other time of the year.

PhD SCHOLARSHIPS IN KANGO COMPARATIVE GENOMICS

One PhD stipend of $19,616 (2007 rate) is available for a student wishing to pursue studies in comparative genomics as part of the ARC Centre for Kangaroo Genomics. Applicants should be citizens of New Zealand or Australia (or Australian permanent residents); international students may apply however they must be able to demonstrate a source of support for tuition fees, as this scholarship is stipend only. Tuition fees are $20, 090 per annum. (2007 Indicative rate.)

ARC CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN VISION SCIENCE PhD SCHOLARSHIPS
The ANU node of the Centre will be awarding 2 scholarships to PhD students. The stipend, tenure and benefits will be equivalent to Australian Postgraduate Awards. (Stipend $19,616, 2007 rate.) International students may apply however they must be able to demonstrate a source of support for tuition fees, as this scholarship is stipend only. Tuition fees are $20, 090 per annum. (2007 Indicative rate.)

Eligibility
• Open to both international & domestic applicants
• The applicant must have applied for admission to a PhD program at ANU
• If successful, the applicant will be supervised by a Centre Chief Investigator
• The applicant must agree to work on a Centre related research project
• The scholarship cannot be held in conjunction with any other award (eg APA, ANU PhD Scholarship, Graduate Scholarship).
• Outstanding students who hold PhD Scholarships and working on Centre related research projects can be considered for a separate Supplementary Scholarship of up to $7000 per annum funded by the Centre.

Application Procedure
Applicants are encouraged to discuss research opportunities with the relevant Chief Investigator at the Centre before lodging an application. Normal ANU application procedures should be followed. An on-line application should be completed and submitted. (List ARC Centre of Excellence in Vision Science PhD Scholarship in ‘Other Scholarships’ field on page 1 of the online application form.)

The application should contain:
• A recent C.V.
• A 200 word research proposal (please note this is mandatory for this scholarship)
• Copies of transcripts of academic record
• Three referee reports
• Examples of written work

(These items can be uploaded to the application form.) Applicants should submit their applications no later than 30 November each year, for commencement no later than 31 March the following year.

AUSTRALIAN AGENCY FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (AUSAID SCHOLARSHIPS)*
(International Applicants from select countries)

The Australian Government foreign aid program provides for a limited number of scholarships for international students from developing countries to study in Australia. These are the Australian Development Scholarships and the Australian Leadership Awards. These scholarships are administered by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID).


Australian Development Scholarships*

The Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) are available to many countries that receive development assistance from Australia. The scholarship numbers and fields of study for each country are determined annually in close consultation with partner governments. ADS are offered in two categories: Public and Open/Equity. The government or employer in a partner country nominates candidates for scholarships in the public category. Individuals may independently apply for a scholarship in the open/equity category, subject to any country-specific selection and ligibility criteria.
Stipend: A$19,365.00 (as from 1 July 2006) per annum tax free, in fortnightly payments

Eligible Program(s): PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research, MPhil (as well as postgraduate coursework, and some undergraduate programs as approved by home country priority areas)
Eligibility Criteria: International students from the following countries will be eligible for limited scholarships:
PACIFIC: Fiji, Kiribati, Micronesia, Pacific Regional, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu;
EAST ASIA: China, East Timor, Indonesia, Mongolia, Philippines;
MEKONG: Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam;
SOUTH ASIA: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka;
AFRICA: Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia.
Applications Close: Students should apply in their home country.


Australian Leadership Awards*

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) are a new regional scholarship and training scheme for future leaders aimed at enhancing mutual understanding, knowledge and innovation and building partnerships within the Asia-Pacific region.
Stipend: A$19,365.00 per annum.
Other Benefits: Full tuition fee; travel to Canberra from outside Australia; Basic health insurance; establishment allowance; a higher stipend of A$27,156 is paid to scholars accompanied by an immediate family member.
Maximum Duration: N/A.
Take Up By: N/A. Eligible Program(s): PhD, MPhil (as well as postgraduate coursework programs. Some undergraduate programs approved by partner governments). Eligibility Criteria: International students
Applications Close: Students apply directly to the University for admission and to AusAID (Canberra) for the scholarship. Electronic Scholarship applications must reach AusAID by 31 July 2007 for study in 2008, (hard copy to AusAID by 16 July 2007) and should include an offer or conditional offer of placement from the University.
How to Apply: Eligibility and selection criteria vary from country to country. The closing date for applications also varies but will usually be in the first half of each calendar year. Applicants must request for application forms and information from the Australian Diplomatic Mission or the Australian Education Centre in their home country. *Please note that these are government scholarships and applicants are advised to check the Australian Scholarships and AusAID websites for further information.
