Teaching the community about being a scientist
Dr. Valter and her Ph.D. student Diana Kirk have started teaching in ACT Primary Schools. The students in kindergarten get a chance to learn about vision in a practical setting. There are stations set up to teach the children about rods and cones, experiencing visual disturbances and how scientists work.
In January 2006 the lab hosted 15 students from the National Youth Science Forum who are interested in biology/medical science. The students were split into two groups. Each group experienced a cow eye dissection and the histological staining of rat retinae.
