The RSBS Biotechnology Transfer Unit (BTU) represents the intellectual property interests of one of Australia's leading biological research institutions - the Research School of Biological Sciences (RSBS). RSBS is part of Australia's premier research university the Australian National University (ANU).

RSBS has considerable intellectual capital and is an organisation well used to delivering scientific and commercial outcomes at the highest international standards.

The BTU is assisted by the ANU technology marketing company ANUTECH.

The intellectual property on offer at RSBS is very broad in its scope reflecting the range of expertise available. Our IP portfolio covers bioinformatics, control of abiotic and biotic plant stresses and plant growth, novel pharmaceuticals, medical and robotic technologies, chemo-sensor technologies, biological control, and environmental management. Four short examples of projects in advanced states of commercialisation are presented as examples - dieback, cell cycle, diagnostics, robots.

RSBS has an outstanding scientific reputation. Some measure of this can be gained from the outcome of the 1995 Australian Research Council's review of the RSBS. The ARC compared RSBS with four departments from the Universities of Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Queensland and two Divisions of the CSIRO. Five comparisons were made, such as research publications per researcher, citations per paper and proportion of papers in the most highly cited 5 and 10% of publications. RSBS topped each category and was on average 1.8 times ahead of the comparator institutions.
