Medical Diagnostic Technologies
Synopsis
Glaucoma testing: Based
on the patented use of the frequency doubling illusion for diagnosisof
glaucoma. This property is licensed to Welch
Allyn Pty. USA, a large medical instrument company. Welch
Allyn in turn have sold the marketing rights to the market leader
in this area, Carl Zeiss Meditec .
Glaucoma is the second commonest cause of blindness world wide
affecting about 2% of the population over 50 years. The new
test is quick, easy to use and highly accurate, having very low
test retest variability in comparison with other perimeters.
The test has also proven to be useful in the diagnosis of other
eye diseases.
A second-generation glaucoma test has been patented with Dr.
Andrew James. This test is based on measuring electrical potentials
from the scalp in response to visual stimuli related to those
in the above device. The new device tests all parts of the visual
field at the same time. Two patent and a PCT patent application
have been filed.
A new project is a greatly improved evoked potential device for
characterizing nerve damage be diseases like Multiple Sclerosis
is under development. It could be marketed with the same hardware
as the newer glaucoma tests. The objective is to match the diagnostic
power of MRI and make the test accessible to physicians caring
MS patients to permit more effective disease management.
