The students designed, established and ran a company that
harnessed the talents of ANU students. Drawing on past
experiences in promoting their own research, the students
formed a company called BiyaTech, and set about designing
a calendar that helped explain the great work done at the
ANU. Featured in the 2006 calendar are 12 researchers
from the health and medical sciences, the natural sciences
and engineering and computing. These researchers are involved
in important work on issues ranging for cancer medicine
to how the universe expands. The YAA program allows students to learn about business
and marketing skills in order to help them further their
careers. The ANU got right behind its students in producing
the calendar. Professor Lawrence Cram, the Deputy Vice
Chancellor of Research at the ANU has been fully supportive
of the student's efforts. “Our young scientists produce
brilliant, innovative research, and it is great to see
them developing teamwork and commercial skills as well”,
said Professor Cram. “The YAA program helped us develop
communication skills and business acumen. We are also very
appreciative to all of the ANU community who have helped
to make this business a success; by extending their help
as models, providing us with insight to their research
or by contributing design expertise to our calendar.” said
PhD student, and managing director, Nisrine El-Mogharbel. The calendars will be distributed to local schools, business
and scientific research labs to increase understanding
of science and the research being undertaken at the ANU. Organisations interested in receiving calendars should
