In Memorium - Geoff Hunter

Geoff Hunter (29) died from a heart attack whilst competing in a fun run on September 14th 2008 in Canberra, ACT.

Geoff commenced with the Visual Sciences Electronics Workshop in 2003 where he was employed as an Electronics Technician for 2 years. During this time he made very important contributions to a number of research programs in the Visual Sciences group by designing and building electronic apparatus and writing computer programs. He became a much valued and popular member of the Group and we were sorry to see him leave in 2005 to take up a position in the ANU Electron Microscopy Unit (ANUEMU).

Geoff joined the ANUEMU as a technical officer. His electronics skills often proved useful in the repair and maintenance of the unit's many microscopes. Although Geoff had no previous experience with electron microscopes before he joined the ANUEMU, his keenness and general excellent grasp of technology enabled him catch up quickly to a level where he could provide training and supervision on many of the instruments available at the ANUEMU.

Geoff was keen to move ahead in his position and wasn't afraid to take on additional responsibilities, such as becoming the ANU representative on the
E-research committee of the recently formed Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Research Facility. He was also enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) degree at the ANU, on a part time basis. More recently, his previous experience with the focused ion beam facilities at the ANUEMU enabled him to secure the higher level position he had been seeking at the ANU Research School of Physics. He was due to have started this new position at the end of September 2008.

As a colleague Geoff was a pleasure to work with and his quiet, friendly and helpful manner endeared him to all those around him. Geoff was always a diligent and conscientious worker and will always be remembered by members of the Research School of Biology with much fondness and high regard.
